Japan address format and examples
Domestic Japanese addresses move from large areas to small ones: postal code, prefecture, municipality, neighborhood, block/building and room. Romanized international addresses commonly reverse that direction and place JAPAN on the final line.

Domestic address hierarchy
Japanese formatting depends on preserving the parent-child relationship between prefecture, municipality and neighborhood. The postal code normally appears first, optionally with the 〒 mark, followed by successively smaller areas, block numbers, building and room.
Seven-digit postal codes
Japan uses seven digits with a hyphen after the third digit. Japan Post permits some municipal information to be omitted when the postal code is exact, while the neighborhood and smaller elements remain necessary. Software tests should usually keep the full hierarchy for clearer validation.
Romanized international format
International mail generally uses Latin letters and Arabic numerals, moving from room, building and neighborhood toward city and prefecture, then postal code and JAPAN. Test both the native Japanese form and the international form instead of merely reversing one string.
Common formatting mistakes
- Treating the seven-digit postal code as an ordinary number field
- Mixing a neighborhood and postal code from different municipalities
- Assuming a mechanically reversed domestic string is a valid international address

The current data pack covers all 47 prefectures with representative municipality and postal records for each.
Can I switch between single-line and multiline addresses?
Yes. Both layouts use native Japanese place names and retain the same address. Copying follows the selected layout.
Do the postcode and municipality match?
Yes. Prefecture, municipality, locality and postcode are retained from the same geography record.
Can a generated address receive mail in Japan?
No. Block and building details are synthetic, and the site does not provide deliverability validation.
